More about this photograph
Description
Made with a large-format camera, the photograph reveals Francisco Coto’s ability to transform an everyday moment through composition. Its apparent spontaneity places us within the image: the foreground, populated by figures and objects, opens onto the pool, while overlapping forms and different planes create a rhythm that carries the eye through the frame. The result retains the intimacy of the moment while conveying a sense of openness, capturing not simply a place, but something of the experience of being there.
Historical note
Opened in the late 1930s, Ojo de Agua became one of Costa Rica’s most traditional swimming complexes and a gathering place for generations of families. Fed by waters from the Barva aquifer, it formed part of a new culture of leisure and public recreation that was developed in the country during the twentieth century.
