For decades, the Atlantic Railway connected Costa Rica’s Central Valley with the Caribbean, making the journey between San José and Limón a familiar experience for generations of Costa Ricans. At stations along the route, vendors offered traditional foods to passengers through the train windows, a familiar sight on the journey. Rail service to the Caribbean was severely affected by damage to the line in the early 1990s, including that caused by the 1991 Limón earthquake, and with the technical closure of INCOFER in 1995, rail services throughout the country were suspended.
