← ExploreDescription Over several decades, Francisco Coto traveled throughout Costa Rica, photographing people within the places where their lives unfolded: families outside their homes, workers in the fields and in factories, fishermen, children, and scenes of gathering, leisure, and celebration. His camera captured both the landscape and the human activity within it, building, image by image, what art historian María Enriqueta Guardia has described as “a study of his time,” extending beyond straightforward documentary photography. In these photographs, his interest in everyday life is paired with a keen attention to composition, light, movement, and the relationship between people and their surroundings.
