← ExploreDescription Opened in 1935, the Palace was for decades one of San José’s most prominent venues for film and live entertainment. Designed in the Art Deco style by German architect Paul Ehrenberg Brinkman, it seated 1,500 spectators. Next door stood the celebrated Soda Palace, one of the capital’s best-known gathering places. In this 1963 photograph, Francisco Coto captures the building and the everyday movement of the city, while its marquee announces How the West Was Won, one of Hollywood’s major productions of the era.
