During those years, prevailing winds carried large quantities of ash toward the Central Valley. In San José, located approximately 24 kilometers from the volcano, more than 26 kilograms of ash per square meter accumulated between March 1963 and March 1965, equivalent to a depth of approximately 2.1 centimeters. The eruption affected thousands of square kilometers around the volcano and transformed the landscape and life of the capital for two years.
