← ExploreDescription Francisco Coto made this photograph of Virginia Elizondo on the very day they met, at the home of photographer Arnoldo Bolaños in Puntarenas. It was the first of thousands of photographs Coto would make of Virginia over more than six decades of their life together. The scene also preserves elements characteristic of Puntarenas at the time, visible in the house’s wooden architecture, its furnishings, and domestic objects. It is particularly evocative that this first portrait of Virginia shows her surrounded by family photographs—an image among images, at the beginning of a relationship in which she would become a constant presence before Coto’s camera.
